The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has heightened its preparedness in response to forecasts of heavy rainfall that could lead to significant flooding in parts of Abuja. This proactive measure follows a flood prediction issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre, under the Federal Ministry of Environment.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, the acting Director-General of FEMD, highlighted that the FEWS Centre has predicted intense rainfall from July 21 to July 25. The areas at highest risk include Mabushi and Kurudu, where the anticipated downpours could result in considerable flooding.<\/p>\n
To mitigate potential impacts, Wenegieme has called on the Facility Maintenance and Management Department to urgently desilt blocked manholes in Mabushi District. This action is critical to ensuring the unimpeded flow of water during the heavy rains. Additionally, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board has been urged to clear all obstructed drainages and remove waste in the district to further reduce flood risks.<\/p>\n
The Satellite Towns Development Department has also been tasked with clearing blocked drainages in Kurudu and addressing issues related to indiscriminately dumped solid waste in the area. These measures are essential to prevent the exacerbation of flooding conditions and to protect the affected communities.<\/p>\n
Wenegieme emphasized the importance of adhering to FEMD’s early warnings and urged residents to use the 112 emergency toll-free number for any disaster-related assistance.
