This move is in line with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the Federal Government’s emphasis on digitally-driven policies.

Fatima Abubakar, the chief of the media section, made the announcement in a statement available to the Nigerian Tribune in Kaduna on Sunday.

The NBTE, under the guidance of Executive Secretary Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, has developed a comprehensive digital quality assurance system for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. This innovative approach integrates technology into all quality assurance processes, significantly reducing the need for physical presence and manual intervention.

“This transformation marks a significant milestone in the board’s digitalization strategy,” the statement noted. “The board seeks to provide more efficient, effective, and transparent quality assurance methods while maintaining the cost-effectiveness and integrity of all regulatory duties.”

At the board’s 197th Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, July 18, 2024, the NBTE celebrated the successful implementation of its digital quality assurance platform. The committee recognized this achievement as a significant advancement in the board’s operations.

Starting in August 2024, all physical accreditation and quality assurance activities will be discontinued. The board has fully transitioned to a digital platform, which has already shown remarkable results.

The digital transformation has led to a substantial increase in the use of the board’s digital system. The number of institutions and stakeholders engaging with the platform has risen to 489. This includes 59 new universities that are required to register and 430 institutions with programs needing accreditation, reaccreditation, or resource inspection.

Furthermore, the board has successfully completed and approved the digital assessment and documentation processes for seventeen (17) institutions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The breakdown is as follows:

Southwest (SW): 5

Southeast (SE): 4

North East (NE): 1

Northwest (NW): 4

North Central (NC): 3

The NBTE has urged all polytechnics, technical institutions, and relevant stakeholders to adopt these technology-driven processes to ensure a more efficient, effective, and transparent quality assurance exercise. The digital approach promises to be cost-effective while upholding high standards of integrity.

“Embracing these technology-driven digitalization processes will not only streamline operations but also enhance the overall quality and accountability of our educational institutions,” the statement emphasized.

By Gabriella Ogbu The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced a major shift in its quality assurance processes, moving entirely to a technology-driven approach starting in August 2024.
