Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara narrowly escaped an attempted assassination while visiting the charred Assembly complex. A viral video shared widely on social media captured the harrowing incident, where the governor came under gunfire, and tear gas was deployed.<\/p>\n
Undaunted by the attack, Governor Fubara issued a resolute statement following the incident, declaring, “When you have the youth, you have the power. But the difference is our power; we will not abuse it. We woke up this morning with very troubling woes and went to the Assembly to see for ourselves what had happened. On my way there, I was shot at directly by the OC operation or DC, directly. But it does not matter. Somebody will die one way or the other, either inside their house or on the road. But to my joy today is, whatever it is that wants to happen, let it happen. If Siminalayi Fubara is impeached, I am not the first nor will I be the last. I am saying if it happens.”<\/p>\n
The governor also issued a stern warning, cautioning against unjust attempts to impeach him and calling upon those responsible for his impeachment to clarify the alleged offenses. He stated, “But what is important is any attempt that is not justified will be resisted. Let them come out and tell Rivers People the offense that I have committed. That is what I want. Come out and tell the people of Rivers State the offense that Fubara committed that warrants impeachment. But my happiness this morning is that the people of Rivers State, represented by every one of you here, are with us. I can go home and sleep.”<\/p>\n
Amidst the turmoil, Governor Fubara assured the crowd that he remains committed to defending their rights and ensuring they benefit from democracy. “Let me assure you people that we will continue to defend you, protect you, and ensure you enjoy the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press,” he affirmed.<\/p>\n
In response to the alarming incident, the Rivers State Police Command issued a statement through Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command spokesperson: “The command is aware of the security situation within the Rivers State House of Assembly. It is currently monitored, and the details are still sketchy. Further developments will be communicated.”<\/p>\n
The situation in Rivers State remains tense as residents anxiously await additional updates on this unsettling and dangerous turn of events.<\/p>\n
