He has also requested the court to vacate its arrest order pending the resolution of an appeal he filed at the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

Bello’s requests are detailed in a letter written by his counsel, Musa Yakubu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). The letter, dated July 12, was addressed to the trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, ahead of Bello’s scheduled arraignment on Wednesday, July 17.

The former governor is facing charges of allegedly laundering N80 billion. In his appeal against the trial, Bello has expressed concerns about the fairness of the proceedings if the case is allowed to continue. The appeal, filed under case number CA/ABJ/CR/535/2024, seeks to set aside a warrant of arrest issued against him on April 17, 2024, which he claims was issued illegally.

Bello also seeks to have the case reassigned to another judge. He argues that the current proceedings, under charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/98/2024, should be nullified, including the service of the EFCC charge on him by substituted means.

The letter, a copy of which was also sent to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, was written in response to a letter from the EFCC to Justice Nwite dated July 8, 2024, and filed on July 10, 2024.

In the appeal, Bello is challenging the trial court’s decisions and is seeking an order from the Court of Appeal to set aside the arrest warrant and the entire proceedings that have taken place so far. His counsel argues that the EFCC’s actions have been procedurally flawed and that Bello’s rights have been compromised.

Former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to indefinitely adjourn the ongoing case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
