They urged President Tinubu to take immediate and decisive actions to prevent mass deaths from starvation caused by poor economic policies and the prevailing insecurity.

On July 12, 2023, President Tinubu assured Nigerians in Abuja that a framework for palliatives to mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal was being developed. He emphasized that the decision to phase out the subsidy was made to ensure future prosperity and promised a foolproof social security structure, particularly in cash transfers.

However, HURIWA lamented that millions of Nigerians have been plunged into deeper poverty and hunger. The group accused the government of failing to address alleged corruption and the large-scale diversion of public funds by officials of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. They claimed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is attempting to cover up accusations against the suspended minister of Humanitarian Affairs and other high-profile officials.

Moreover, HURIWA condemned governors and federal officials for allegedly diverting and stealing palliatives intended for starving Nigerians. They called on President Tinubu to instruct the Department of State Services (DSS), EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to monitor the distribution of the 20 trailer loads of rice allocated to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as previous palliatives were reportedly stolen by top government officials and politicians.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed concerns to President Bola Tinubu, highlighting that the renewed hope promised to Nigerians is swiftly becoming a forlorn hope. In a statement signed by its coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA pointed out that over a year after the promise of alleviating economic hardship following the […]

[172

post-39095","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
