The FBI has successfully accessed the locked phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the shooter at a Trump rally. While there are unconfirmed reports that the device was an iPhone, the FBI has not commented on this detail.<\/p>\n
Initially, the FBI reported on Sunday that attempts to access the phone had not been successful. However, the agency announced just one day later that it had succeeded. The FBI is investigating the July 13 shooting incident at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which resulted in one death and injuries to former President Trump and other spectators. The incident is being treated as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism.<\/p>\n
Though initial findings suggest Crooks acted alone, the FBI continues to investigate whether he had any assistance in planning or carrying out the attack. Accessing his phone is a critical part of this inquiry. The FBI stated there are currently no public safety concerns.<\/p>\n
The FBI has not identified a motive for Crooks’ actions but is working to determine the sequence of events and his movements before the shooting. This involves collecting and reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and following up on leads. The shooter’s phone has been obtained for examination.<\/p>\n
Field agents in Pennsylvania initially attempted and failed to unlock Crooks\u2019 phone, which was then sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia. The FBI technical specialists there successfully accessed the phone and are now analysing his electronic devices.<\/p>\n
This situation echoes past instances where the FBI faced challenges accessing locked iPhones in high-profile cases. In 2016, the FBI demanded that Apple unlock an iPhone involved in the San Bernardino shooting case. Apple refused, arguing that creating a backdoor for law enforcement would pose a security risk if exploited by hackers.
