This international component of the UTME took place on Saturday, July 13, targeting international applicants seeking admission into Nigerian postsecondary institutions.

According to JAMB, the exams were conducted in the following cities: Johannesburg (South Africa), Abidjan (Cote D’Ivoire), London (United Kingdom), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Buea (Cameroon), Accra (Ghana), Cotonou (Benin Republic), and Banjul (The Gambia). The Board highlighted that this initiative aims to position Nigerian tertiary institutions on a global scale, attracting international students and showcasing the quality of education available in Nigeria.

In its weekly bulletin released in Abuja, JAMB emphasized that this strategy has been effective in drawing international students to Nigerian universities. The bulletin also mentioned that the foreign student admission rate of institutions is now a factor in the National Tertiary Admissions Performance-Merit Award (NATAP-M Award), which recognizes universities excelling in attracting international students.

With the 2024 Admission Policy Meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 18, JAMB has reiterated that the admission process for the 2024 academic year is set to begin soon. The policy meeting, to be presided over by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, will approve the commencement of the year’s admissions procedure and establish guidelines to ensure a standardized process across all institutions.

A highlight of this year’s admissions exercise will be the inclusion of the NATAP-M Awards. The awards aim to recognize outstanding performance in the admissions process, with the overall winner receiving a grand prize of N500 million. Additionally, other institutions will collectively share N250 million in consolation prizes.

The policy meeting is a crucial event where key stakeholders in the education sector, including vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, and other important figures, will gather to review and adopt the guidelines for the 2024 admissions process. The meeting will also involve a review of the results from the 2023 admissions cycle and the performance of candidates in the 2024 UTME.

JAMB clarified that the minimum admission scores for the 2024 admissions process will be determined during the conference. These scores, often misunderstood as cut-off marks, represent the baseline that no institution should fall below. The decisions made at the policy meeting will serve as guidelines for all institutions, ensuring a fair and uniform admissions process.

Institutions are expected to adhere to the established norms, as any deviation will result in sanctions. This policy meeting not only sets the grand norms for the admissions exercise but also ensures that Nigerian tertiary institutions maintain high standards and continue to attract international students.

By Gabriella Ogbu The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the successful administration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in eight countries worldwide.
