The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has condemned the ongoing scarcity of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as fuel, in several states across the Federation. The association has warned that if the Federal Government does not promptly address the issue, it will mobilize students for a national demonstration.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, Comrade Marshall Obaji, President of NAUS, lamented that the country’s students are already enduring severe hardships due to the current economic crisis, and the fuel shortage has exacerbated their suffering.<\/p>\n
Part of the statement read: \u201cThe leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) wishes to communicate its disenchantment at the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS\/Fuel) around the country, which has led to an increase in the hardship faced by students studying across Nigerian universities.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn our day-to-day life, we are either direct or indirect users of fuel, and its scarcity affects us more because we are at the stage where attention needs to be given to our studies in order to leave us equipped and prepared for life and society. The scarcity of PMS has affected the academic, social, and financial lives of university students, and indeed this is a dangerous reality for our country.<\/p>\n
\u201cNAUS, therefore, demands that the Federal Government and the NNPC address this challenge, in order to ameliorate the sufferings of the students or be prepared for a nationwide protest across all 36 states of the Federation, including the FCT,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n
The President of NAUS also called on state and municipal governments to provide palliative measures for university students within their respective jurisdictions. He emphasized that students, being a significant part of society, should always be included in such initiatives.<\/p>\n
“In order to lessen the suffering experienced by students in Nigerian universities, we urge state and local governments to supply university students in their respective domains or catchments with materials and palliative measures,” Obaji continued.<\/p>\n
“Students deserve attention, care, and a responsive government to enable them to prepare for leadership and a life of opportunities because they are an integral part of society and the people who will carry the weight of society’s survival in the near future.”<\/p>\n
NAUS highlighted that the fuel scarcity has not only disrupted students’ academic pursuits but has also strained their social and financial lives. Many students rely on fuel for transportation, electricity generation, and other essential activities. The association stressed that the unavailability of fuel is causing significant disruptions, leading to increased transportation costs, power outages, and higher living expenses, all of which are taking a toll on students’ well-being and academic performance.<\/p>\n
Moreover, NAUS expressed concern over the broader implications of the fuel crisis on the nation’s educational system and economic stability. The association argued that the continuous neglect of the fuel scarcity issue could lead to widespread unrest among students, which could further destabilize the already fragile educational sector.<\/p>\n
In light of these challenges, NAUS reiterated its call for immediate action from the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The association urged the government to ensure a steady supply of fuel to alleviate the hardships faced by students and other citizens.<\/p>\n
NAUS also appealed to the government to consider long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences of fuel scarcity. These solutions include investing in alternative energy sources, improving the country’s refining capacity, and implementing policies that promote energy efficiency and sustainability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
