In response to the current fuel supply challenges, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced extended operating hours for fuel stations to ensure adequate distribution of petrol. This decision comes as a measure to address the tight supply situation caused by recent adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n
The Executive Vice President of Downstream at NNPC Ltd, Dapo Segun, made this announcement during a joint inspection of fuel stations in Abuja with officials from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The inspection aimed to monitor and improve the supply and distribution of fuel in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across the country.<\/p>\n
Segun explained that the disruption of ship-to-ship transfer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) due to thunderstorms had significantly impacted fuel logistics. “There was a gap in the ship-to-shore discharge of PMS, which is a volatile liquid. During thunderstorms, we had to suspend the discharge and movement for safety reasons,” he said. This disruption, compounded by adverse weather conditions affecting berthing at jetties and truck load-outs, has led to supply shortages and long queues at fuel stations.<\/p>\n
To mitigate these issues, NNPC has extended the turnaround period for PMS trucking and is mobilizing trucks to ensure continuous loading throughout the weekend. The company is also encouraging fuel stations to operate for longer hours and urging marketers to collaborate by sharing stocks to ensure even distribution. “Rather than have a station with more trucks, they can release those trucks to other stations for circulation,” Segun noted.<\/p>\n
The Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure at NMDPRA, Mr. Ogbugo Ukoha, reiterated that the supply tightness in Abuja and parts of Lagos resulted from the inclement weather affecting offshore operations and trucking routes. Ukoha assured that measures were in place to prevent hoarding and black-market activities, with officials monitoring stations and depots to ensure compliance. “Due to the tightness in supply, there may be elements who will try to take advantage. We assure Nigerians to go about their businesses and purchase the volume they need without panic,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Addressing concerns about potential fuel price increases, Ukoha affirmed that there are no plans to raise pump prices. He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure energy security, including the regulation of national strategic stock and the development of a framework to stabilize supply and prices. “Once those national strategic stocks are in place, the logistic issues we have will be mitigated to a large extent,” Ukoha added.<\/p>\n
During the inspection, the team visited several fuel stations in the FCT, including the NNPC Ltd. Retail Outlet at Katampe and the AP fuel station on Ibrahim Way, Garki 2. Station managers confirmed the availability of sufficient stock and the accuracy of fuel pumps, while motorists expressed mixed feelings about the situation. Some motorists reported long wait times, while others managed to fuel up quickly.<\/p>\n
