Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested and detained a man identified as Shuaibu Yushau for attempted suicide. The incident occurred on Monday when Yushau climbed a broadcast mast owned by Aso Television and Radio in the Katampe area of Abuja to protest against insecurity and hardship in the country.<\/p>\n
The FCT Police Command\u2019s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement titled, \u201cAso Radio Mast Climbing: Man Arrested for Attempted Suicide.\u201d She explained that Yushau had been planning the act for about a week before deciding to climb the mast.<\/p>\n
“Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe at about 09:10 a.m, the operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilized to the location,” Adeh stated. “With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man, later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, was prevented from taking his own life.”<\/p>\n
Yushau\u2019s placard highlighted his protest against the prevailing insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria. According to Adeh, Yushau confessed during interrogation that he had been observing the mast for about a week, planning his protest.<\/p>\n
“The suspect is presently in police custody and in a stable condition,” Adeh confirmed. She added that the police are conducting further investigations to understand the full context of Yushau’s actions and to ensure appropriate measures are taken.<\/p>\n
This incident underscores the growing frustration and desperation among some Nigerians due to the country’s security challenges and economic difficulties. The police have emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and urged citizens to seek help rather than resorting to drastic measures.<\/p>\n
The FCT Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining security and order while providing support to individuals facing mental health crises. “We urge anyone experiencing emotional distress or hardship to reach out to the appropriate channels for assistance. The police and other support services are here to help,” Adeh reiterated.<\/p>\n
The police also called on community leaders, religious organizations, and non-governmental organizations to collaborate in addressing the underlying issues contributing to such acts of desperation.
