Liberian President Joseph Boakai has announced a 40% reduction in his annual salary, decreasing it from $13,400 to $8,000 per year, in a bid to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and leadership by example.<\/p>\n
The decision comes amid heightened public scrutiny of government salaries and widespread discontent over the rising cost of living in the West African nation, where approximately 20% of the population lives on less than $2 a day.<\/p>\n
President Boakai\u2019s office stated that he hoped to set a precedent for \u201cresponsible governance\u201d and demonstrate \u201csolidarity\u201d with Liberians.<\/p>\n
Reactions to the pay cut have been mixed. While some praise the move, others question its significance given that the president continues to receive benefits such as a daily allowance and medical cover.<\/p>\n
Anderson D. Miamen of the Centre of Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, called the pay cut \u201cwelcoming,\u201d expressing hope that \u201cthe public will clearly see where the deductions will go and how they will be used to positively impact the lives of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since taking office in January, after defeating Mr. Weah in a run-off election, President Boakai has prioritised tackling corruption and financial mismanagement.<\/p>\n
He has declared his assets and ordered an audit of the presidential office, with results pending.<\/p>\n
