A Federal High Court in Abuja has set September 26 for the arraignment of two senior staff members of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Aminat Asuni and Laure Abdullahi, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for their involvement in an alleged N1.84 billion fraud.<\/p>\n

These officials are among the five previously arraigned by the ICPC before other courts. Justice Nkeonye Maha scheduled the arraignment date following a request by ICPC counsel, Mrs. P.N. Emeka, for more time to serve the defendants with the charges. Emeka informed the court that the defendants were evading arrest, prompting her to seek the adjournment to ensure they are properly served before the next hearing.<\/p>\n

The ICPC has filed separate charges against Asuni and Abdullahi. In the first charge (FHC\/ABJ\/CR\/207\/2024), Asuni faces a four-count charge dated May 8 and filed on May 10, alleging she received N336 million in different tranches through her Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account under the false pretense of project supervision in March 2023. Abdullahi faces a similar four-count charge (FHC\/ABJ\/CR\/208\/2024), alleging he received N433 million through his GTB account under the same pretense during the same period.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
These acts are said to have significantly contributed to the economic adversity of the REA, violating Section 1(1)(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006. The charges are part of the broader misappropriation of N1.84 billion involving seven top officials of the REA, including Abubakar Sambo, the Director of Finance and Account of the agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
