This figure is more than double the $657 million stolen during the same period in 2023.

The TRM Labs report highlights that a few significant attacks accounted for the majority of the thefts, with the top five hacks comprising 70% of the total amount stolen in 2024. Major attack methods included private key and seed phrase compromises, smart contract exploits, and flash loan attacks.

One of the largest attacks this year targeted DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, resulting in the loss of over 4,500 BTC, valued at over $300 million at the time. The exact cause of the attack remains unclear, but potential vectors include stolen private keys or address poisoning. Address poisoning involves attackers sending small amounts of cryptocurrency to create fake transaction histories, potentially misleading victims into transferring funds to incorrect addresses in future transactions.

“The exact cause of the attack is still unclear. Possible vectors include stolen private keys or address poisoning,” stated TRM Labs. This incident exemplifies the vulnerabilities within the crypto ecosystem that hackers continue to exploit.

TRM Labs researchers noted that each of the first six months of 2024 saw more money stolen than the corresponding months in 2023. The average hack size increased by 150%, indicating not only more frequent attacks but also more significant individual losses. Despite this alarming increase, the total amount stolen is still a third less than the record set in the same period of 2022.

“To date, TRM has not identified any fundamental changes in the security of the cryptocurrency ecosystem that might explain this upward trend, nor have we observed significant differences in attack methods or the number of attacks between the first halves of 2023 and 2024,” the researchers noted. They pointed out that significantly higher average token prices over the past six months likely contributed to the increased theft volumes.

This trend underscores the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the persistent vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The report calls for enhanced security measures and continuous vigilance to protect digital assets.

In response to these escalating threats, experts advocate for several measures, including better education on security best practices for cryptocurrency users, improved security protocols for exchanges, and the development of more secure smart contract platforms. Additionally, regulatory bodies are being urged to create frameworks that mandate stronger security measures for cryptocurrency transactions and storage.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Hackers have stolen $1.4 billion worth of cryptocurrencies worldwide in the first six months of 2024, according to a report by TRM Labs, a leading crypto research firm.
