This action was part of a routine inspection targeting border communities near the Niger Republic.

Lawan Musa Dadingelma, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC in Yobe, informed reporters in Damaturu about the crackdown. According to Dadingelma, the factories were closed due to poor manufacturing practices and failure to follow the proper registration procedures mandated by NAFDAC.

“We were in Yunusari, about 100 kilometers from the Niger Republic. We sealed off many unregistered factories, confiscated their wares, and locked down the premises. We advised the operators to come and register with NAFDAC,” Dadingelma stated. “The operators thought that due to the insurgency, NAFDAC could not visit the place, but we took them by surprise, and we closed down five unregistered products.”

Following the operation, many sachet water operators have started approaching the NAFDAC office to regulate their factories according to the water treatment procedures outlined by the agency. This compliance is seen as a positive step towards ensuring the safety and quality of sachet water produced in the region.

Dadingelma also commended the Divisional Police Officer of Yunusari for their assistance in executing the operation. The collaboration between NAFDAC and local law enforcement was crucial in the successful shutdown of these illegal operations.

The importance of regulating sachet water factories cannot be overstated. Unregistered factories often operate without adhering to proper hygiene and safety standards, posing significant health risks to consumers. NAFDAC’s proactive measures in Yobe State underscore the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that all food and beverage products meet stringent quality standards.

In addition to enforcing regulations, NAFDAC is also focused on educating local manufacturers about the importance of compliance. By registering with NAFDAC, sachet water producers can gain access to guidelines and support that will help them improve their manufacturing practices and ensure their products are safe for consumption.

This recent operation in Yunusari is part of a broader strategy by NAFDAC to clamp down on unregistered and substandard products across Nigeria. The agency plans to continue its inspections and enforcement actions in other regions, particularly in areas prone to such illegal activities.

As NAFDAC intensifies its efforts, it calls on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious or unregistered products to the authorities. The cooperation between regulatory agencies, law enforcement, and the public is vital in maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s food and beverage industry.

The Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has shut down five unregistered sachet water factories in Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State.
