This initiative is part of the administration’s broader plan to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of Nigeria’s capital city.

The committee was inaugurated by Mr. Felix Obuah, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), in a ceremony held in Abuja. Obuah highlighted that this move aligns with the directives of the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who has emphasized the importance of relocating those occupying critical roadways to facilitate road construction and urban development.

“The relocation is a strategic effort to give Abuja a new look,” Obuah stated. He added that the Wike-led FCT Administration is committed to providing a better alternative before demolishing temporary and illegal sites. This approach aims to ensure an orderly migration to the permanent site in Wasa, preventing disruption to the businesses and livelihoods of those affected.

The committee’s primary responsibility is to oversee the relocation process, ensuring it is conducted smoothly and efficiently. This includes identifying suitable areas within Wasa District, coordinating with affected mechanics and technicians, and managing the logistics of the move. The goal is to create a more organized environment that supports both the expansion of existing roads and the construction of new ones.

“The decision to relocate rather than demolish is part of our strategy to ensure a smooth transition,” Obuah explained. “We want to provide a better alternative for those currently occupying the road corridors, particularly the Apo Mechanic Village. This will pave the way for necessary road expansions and new constructions.”

The Apo Mechanic Village, which has grown significantly over the years, is currently located on a vital road corridor. Its relocation is seen as essential for the development of the area’s infrastructure. By moving these businesses to Wasa District, the FCTA aims to alleviate congestion, improve environmental conditions, and facilitate urban growth.

The committee is also expected to engage with stakeholders to address any concerns and ensure that the new location in Wasa District meets the operational needs of the mechanics and technicians. The FCTA has committed to equipping the new site with modern facilities, including proper drainage, waste management systems, and enhanced security measures.

Stakeholders have reacted positively to the initiative, recognizing the potential benefits of a well-planned relocation. However, some have expressed concerns about the impact on their businesses and livelihoods. The committee has pledged to work closely with all parties involved to mitigate any adverse effects and ensure a fair process.

The relocation project will be implemented in phases, with a detailed timeline to be developed by the committee. This phased approach aims to minimize disruptions and provide adequate support to affected businesses. The FCTA has also promised financial and logistical assistance during the transition period.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has inaugurated a 19-member technical committee tasked with the relocation of mechanics and technicians currently operating along road corridors in Apo and other areas to Wasa District, Abuja.
