The protest, tagged #ReformEFCC, was scheduled to begin on July 5, 2024.

In Lagos, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have been deployed to strategic locations around the EFCC office on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. The heightened security includes patrol vans, anti-riot gun trucks, and Black Marias. Similarly, in Abuja, joint security forces, including operatives from the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), are stationed at the EFCC’s operational headquarters in Jabi and the zonal office in Wuse 2.

An anonymous EFCC official confirmed that the increased security measures are intended to prevent any protests from occurring near the commission’s offices. The EFCC has alleged that the protest is being spearheaded by a former governor and two ex-ministers.

The protesters have outlined six key demands aimed at reforming the EFCC for better performance: ending indiscriminate arrests and home invasions, stopping property destruction during sting operations, ceasing the profiling of young Nigerians, and halting the assault and manhandling of Nigerians. Organizers have emphasized that the demonstration is intended to be peaceful, people-centered, and apolitical, warning against any attempts to politicize it.

The EFCC has raised concerns about a shadowy group allegedly planning to instigate a protest against the commission. Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, disclosed that the group has been actively campaigning on social media, recruiting impressionable young Nigerians, including students, to take up “arms” against the EFCC. According to Oyewale, the campaign is being promoted as resistance to the commission’s enforcement of cybercrime laws.

“While the commission is not averse to protests by citizens, it is alarmed by emerging evidence suggesting a grand design by corrupt elements under investigation or prosecution by the commission to exploit the so-called protest to orchestrate a national uprising that may threaten the peace and security of our dear nation,” Oyewale stated. “As a responsible law enforcement organization, the commission will not tolerate any breakdown of law and order anywhere in the country, especially around its office locations.”

The EFCC, in collaboration with sister security agencies, is taking necessary measures to address potential threats to national peace and security. This proactive approach underscores the commission’s commitment to maintaining order while navigating the complexities of its anti-corruption mandate.

The protests and the EFCC’s response have sparked a broader discussion about the commission’s operations and its relationship with the public. Critics argue that the EFCC’s methods can be heavy-handed and infringe on civil liberties, while supporters assert that the commission plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has bolstered security at its headquarters in Lagos and Abuja in anticipation of a protest organized by aggrieved youths demanding reforms within the commission.
