The United Nations (UN) has revealed a staggering global crisis, as no fewer than 114 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes by the end of September, citing conflict, persecution, and human rights violations as the primary causes.<\/p>\n
The report identifies various hotspots of displacement, with the war in Ukraine, conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Myanmar, and factors like drought, floods, and insecurity in Somalia, alongside a prolonged humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, playing central roles in this dire situation.<\/p>\n
Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflicts and their devastating impact on innocent lives, emphasizing the need for a united effort to end conflicts and facilitate the return and resettlement of displaced individuals.<\/p>\n
As of June, the global number of forcibly displaced people stood at 110 million, reflecting an increase of 1.6 million from the end of the previous year. Furthermore, between June and the end of September, an additional four million individuals were estimated to have faced forced displacement, pushing the overall figure to 114 million.<\/p>\n
It’s important to note that the UNHCR’s report does not cover the consequences of the Israel-Palestine conflict that erupted on October 7, as it fell beyond the scope of the report.<\/p>\n
The report also disclosed that low and middle-income countries have been shouldering the burden of hosting three-quarters of those in need of international assistance.<\/p>\n
Despite the overwhelming challenges, High Commissioner Grandi remains steadfast in seeking solutions for refugees and other displaced populations, even in the face of ongoing conflicts in places like Gaza and Sudan.<\/p>\n
This report coincides with the forthcoming second Global Refugee Forum, scheduled from December 13 to 15 in Geneva.
