Stakeholders from Kwara and Niger States have praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating the 1,000-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry superhighway. Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara and Umaru Bago of Niger emphasized that the project showcases the President\u2019s dedication to driving significant socioeconomic growth.<\/p>\n

In Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, a stakeholders’ engagement was held to inform the public about the Kwara and Niger sections of the superhighway and to gather support for it and other presidential initiatives. The superhighway will pass through 188 kilometres of Kwara and 125 kilometres of Niger.<\/p>\n

The engagement, organized by the Federal Ministry of Works, included Niger State Governor Bago, Kwara Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, federal and state parliamentarians, Minister of Youth Development Dr. Jamilah Bio, state cabinet members, royal fathers, industrialists like Dr. Kamoru Yusuf of KAM Holdings, party leaders, community representatives, transport unions, farmers’ associations, civil society organizations, marketers, and youths.<\/p>\n

Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by Deputy Governor Alabi, remarked that the road project reflects President Tinubu\u2019s bold vision to develop infrastructure that enhances national connectivity and boosts the economy. He stated, \u201cWhat we are doing this afternoon is another testament to the bold vision of President Tinubu and another evidence that our country is in a race to align development priorities and population growth with commensurate infrastructure that connects every part of Nigeria. But much more important is the decision of the President to make the people the centrepiece of this bold vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the project’s socioeconomic implications for national connectivity and growth are profound. AbdulRazaq also commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for effectively combining expertise and political skills to advance the project, assuring full support from the people.<\/p>\n

Governor Bago urged locals from Kwara and Niger to support the federal government and take ownership of the road projects, emphasizing their benefits and advising against disturbing contractors or demanding compensation. \u201cWe need to talk to our people that the government is not grabbing your land; the federal government is bringing development to you. We are not going to pay one kobo for compensation because it is for your good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Minister Umahi, acknowledging the support from Governors AbdulRazaq and Bago, mentioned that the Ministry has 18 federal projects in Kwara and is prioritizing their completion. He highlighted that four projects are ongoing in Kwara through a tax credit arrangement with BUA, expecting their prompt delivery.<\/p>\n

Umahi praised the hospitality and engagement of the governors and their teams during the deliberations and appreciated the contributions of Ministers of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi SAN and Dr. Bio in approving the Kaiama-Tesse-Kishi road construction.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the long history of the Sokoto-Badagry road project, Umahi noted, \u201cThe Sokoto-Badagry road has been in the pipeline for the past 48 years. You can imagine the successive administrations that came and left and not even a single kilometre was done. It remained a dream. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway was raised by President Tinubu as Governor of Lagos State 25 years ago. The president will accomplish all the three legacy projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Committee Chairman on Works, Barinada Mpigi, condemned the abandonment of road projects by contractors after receiving mobilization funds and warned that the Senate would sanction those who fail to return to sites promptly.<\/p>\n
