This decision was taken in response to the tragic murder of Olaoye Fabiyi, a final-year student, allegedly by cultists.

In a statement released by the institution’s public relations officer, Odubela Ayotunde, on Thursday, July 4, it was confirmed that all exams have been postponed until further notice. “The university administration has ordered the immediate suspension of all exams scheduled for Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, 2024,” the statement read.

The incident that led to this suspension occurred when 400-level students were outside the lecture hall celebrating the end of an exam. Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla, a student in the College of Humanities’ History and Diplomatic Studies Department, was kidnapped by unknown individuals. Initially, his birthday led to the assumption that he was part of the festivities, but as he resisted being taken away, suspicions arose. The kidnappers then dragged him towards the University CENVOS building, as reported by Channels Television.

Ayotunde recounted the incident: “Security personnel on-site promptly alerted the security unit, which responded swiftly. Upon seeing the security operatives, the assailants fled through the bushes behind CENVOS. Fabiyi was rescued alive but sustained severe injuries and was bleeding heavily.”

Fabiyi was first taken to the University Health Centre and later transferred to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for more extensive medical care. Due to the severity of the head injuries he sustained, he was subsequently referred to Babcock University Teaching Hospital. Tragically, Fabiyi was pronounced dead while being transported to Babcock for further treatment.

This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the university community, prompting the administration to take immediate action. The suspension of exams is intended to allow students and staff time to grieve and to ensure the safety and security of everyone on campus.

The university administration has also announced plans to enhance campus security measures in light of this incident. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students and staff. We will be implementing additional security protocols and working closely with local law enforcement to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future,” Ayotunde stated.

In addition, counseling services are being made available to students and staff affected by the incident. The university is urging anyone with information about the attackers to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

Fabiyi’s death has highlighted the urgent need for addressing cult-related violence in educational institutions. The university community, along with local authorities, is calling for a comprehensive strategy to combat cultism and ensure that students can pursue their education in a safe and secure environment.

By Gabriella Ogbu The management of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has indefinitely suspended the ongoing second-semester examinations.
