This sentiment was voiced by the CDHR’s National President, Debo Adeniran, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Lagos.

“We as activists are not happy with the President’s performance so far. During his campaign, we believed so much in him, given his history as one of the spearheads of PRONACO. We thought his reign would bring succor and relief to the people, especially as we missed that golden opportunity during the June 12 election. However, the reverse is the case right now,” Adeniran said.

Adeniran called on President Tinubu to consider seeking advice and expertise from professionals outside his current cabinet to enhance the effectiveness of his policies and programs. “We would like to call on the President to explore the possibility of reaching out to more professionals even outside his cabinet so that his policies and programs can have a more beneficial effect on the populace,” he suggested.

Highlighting a critical issue, Adeniran pointed out the rising cost of basic food items, which has significantly impacted Nigerians’ living standards. “It is a known fact that food is a primary resource for human survival. For some time now, Nigerians have been under torment by the astronomical rise in the prices of basic foods in the marketplace,” he noted. The surge in prices has affected staples such as garri, millet, yam, fermented cassava meal (akpu), palm oil, vegetable oil, beef, rice, and beans, leading to widespread concern about hunger and malnutrition.

Adeniran emphasized that the steep prices have severely impacted citizens’ purchasing power, contributing to increased poverty and a deteriorating cost of living. “This gives room for a huge concern as the steep prices have battered the purchasing power of citizens, leading to uncertainty, an increase in poverty, and an unpalatable cost of living. The disruption caused by rising food inflation has further decimated the low wages of the people,” he said.

In addition to economic challenges, the CDHR president also deplored the poor state of roads across the country, accusing state governments of negligence. He urged immediate action to address the infrastructure issues that have compounded the daily struggles of Nigerians.

The CDHR’s critique comes at a time when the government is under pressure to deliver on its promises of improved living conditions and economic stability. The organization called for a more inclusive approach to governance, leveraging the expertise of professionals to develop and implement effective solutions for the nation’s pressing problems.

Adeniran concluded by reaffirming the CDHR’s commitment to holding the government accountable and advocating for the rights and welfare of all Nigerians. “Our duty as activists is to ensure that the government lives up to its promises and responsibilities to the people. We will continue to speak out and take action to protect the rights and interests of Nigerians,” he stated.

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the performance of President Bola Tinubu to date.
