The ceremony, held in Abuja, was an important step in improving the governance and management of Nigeria’s tertiary education.

Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, emphasized the gravity of this decision, noting that it came after ten months of thorough consideration. Addressing the newly inaugurated chairs and members of the councils, he lauded their appointment but also cautioned against excessive interference in the financial, personnel, and resource management of the institutions.

“There is a clear line of operations between the Management and respective Governing Councils of the tertiary institutions,” Prof. Mamman stated. “Councils are not to interfere with the day-to-day management of human, financial, and material resources of the institutions.”

He urged the councils to explore diverse funding sources and partnerships to boost the institutions’ internally generated revenue. “You are responsible for setting the strategic direction, overseeing transparent and responsible financial management of the sector, and ensuring the overall performance of these institutions to achieve the national goals and expectations of tertiary education,” he added.

Prof. Mamman also stressed the importance of promoting responsible unionism and addressing issues such as cultism and drug abuse among students. He called for effective strategies to detect and eradicate social vices like sexual harassment, theft, extortion, and inducement.

In his address, Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, highlighted the necessity of adhering to the legal frameworks that govern postsecondary educational institutions. “Compliance with these legal frameworks ensures that our institutions operate with integrity and accountability. It also helps to safeguard the autonomy of our academic institutions while promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement,” he said.

Chief Wole Olanipekun, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, speaking on behalf of the Governing Councils, emphasized the importance of a collaborative relationship between the councils and university management. “We are to build and not to pull down,” he said, advising Vice Chancellors to work harmoniously with the councils to enhance the institutions while also exercising caution in their interactions with students.

Chris Maiyaki, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), congratulated the new councils and assured them of the NUC’s full support. “Our doors and windows are open to you.
