{"id":37268,"date":"2024-07-03T11:03:15","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T11:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=37268"},"modified":"2024-07-03T11:03:15","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T11:03:15","slug":"ubec-calls-for-increased-funding-reforms-in-basic-education-across-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/07\/03\/ubec-calls-for-increased-funding-reforms-in-basic-education-across-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"UBEC Calls for Increased Funding, Reforms in Basic Education Across Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Gabriella Ogbu<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has urged both the federal capital territory administration and the governors of the 36 states to ramp up funding for basic education, citing the inadequacy of the federal government&#8217;s current matching grant assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a meeting with civil society organizations (CSOs) on the Effective Schools Program in Abuja, Bobboyi appealed to CSOs to support the implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE) by advocating and raising awareness among stakeholders about the critical importance of prioritizing basic education.<\/p>\n<p>Key concerns highlighted by Bobboyi included the high number of out-of-school children, insufficient teaching infrastructure, outdated UBE enabling Act, disparities in teacher availability and quality, lack of partnerships for UBE delivery, insecurity, and a lack of education awareness in rural and underprivileged communities.<\/p>\n<p>Bobboyi urged state governments to promptly utilize their intervention funds as soon as available to demonstrate commitment to enhancing basic education delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, UBEC is set to launch an Open School initiative aimed at providing a flexible learning environment for Nigerian students. Prof. Isiaka Kolawole, Deputy Executive Secretary (Service), emphasized that the initiative aims to expand access to basic education nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing ongoing challenges, Bobboyi stressed the need for significant reforms in the education sector, despite efforts and investments by government, businesses, private citizens, and UBEC interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Bala Zakari, Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical) of UBEC, highlighted a critical shortage of teachers in public primary schools, with 194,876 teachers needed out of the required 694,078 based on a 2022 personnel audit.<\/p>\n<p>Zakari called on state governments to increase education funding and advocated for a review of the 2004 UBE Act to address these issues effectively.
