This call was made by Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, Senior Special Assistant to the President on the School Feeding Program, during a two-day training program aimed at Nigerian state authorities on the domestication of the AUDA-NEPAD Continental school feeding guidelines.

The workshop, titled “Encouraging State-Driven Implementation and Best Practices for School Feeding Towards Local Agricultural Value Chain, Community Engagement, and Economic Development,” gathered key stakeholders in the nation’s education system. The goal was to discuss, coordinate, and explore the best approaches for executing the school feeding program.

Adeniji emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector, highlighting that the attendees were the critical link between state governments, communities, and schools to ensure the program’s success.

“We need to champion feeding children, especially from the states,” Adeniji stated. “While some states are actively participating, others are not. The program managers and state focal points are the best candidates to lead this effort. They are in the ideal position to encourage administrators to support the school food program by championing this idea with them. That’s why we are here today.”

Adeniji underscored the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments to achieve the program’s goals. “There is synergy. You can’t accomplish it by yourself. That’s the reason we’re here. Our goal is to work together and decide how to proceed.”

She reiterated President’s commitment to the welfare, education, and overall development of Nigerian children. “Because of his devotion to the Nigerian child, our President brought back the school food program to the country. He has a strong commitment to our kids’ welfare, education, and overall development. And for that reason, he is dedicated to making sure that nothing is overlooked.”

Adeniji also highlighted the broader objectives of the school feeding initiative. “This initiative aims to do more than just serve meals. It’s about developing the leaders of tomorrow. Research continuously demonstrates that children who receive a healthy diet have higher cognitive function, higher attendance rates, and higher academic achievement. We are investing in a better future for everyone when we make sure our kids are fed well.”

The workshop aimed to set a clear path for program managers and focal officers to return to their states and encourage school principals to begin feeding children immediately. Adeniji expressed optimism that with concerted efforts and collaboration, the school feeding program would achieve its desired outcomes, fostering community engagement and economic development through local agricultural value chains.

As the meeting concluded, stakeholders left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to making the school feeding program a success, ensuring that every child in Nigeria has access to nutritious meals, which is a fundamental step towards a brighter future for the nation.

By Gabriella Ogbu The presidency has urged the 36 states of the Federation to actively participate in implementing the school feeding initiative.
