The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has strongly criticized the Federal Government’s decision to discontinue funding for the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), vowing to push for a reversal of the decision unless the government reconsiders.<\/p>\n
NUT National President Audu Amba voiced his concerns during the Professional Standards for School Leadership public presentation in Abuja on Thursday. He condemned the government’s move as “inimical” and emphasized the critical role of TRCN in regulating and professionalizing educators across all levels of education in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Amba underscored the importance of TRCN in enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria, highlighting the nation’s historical challenges with teacher quality. He argued that defunding TRCN would undermine efforts to improve educational standards and professionalize the teaching profession.<\/p>\n
“The TRCN is the regulatory body that professionalizes all educators who work in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education,” Amba stated emphatically. “It is essential for ensuring that our teachers meet required standards and contribute effectively to educational development.”<\/p>\n
Expressing dismay over the sudden withdrawal of government funding, Amba questioned the government’s commitment to prioritizing education and the teaching profession. He pointed out that regulatory bodies for professions are typically supported by government funding worldwide, emphasizing that neglecting TRCN could have far-reaching implications for education quality in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
“As leaders of teachers, we cannot afford to overlook the significance of TRCN in shaping the future of education in our country,” Amba asserted. “We call on the Federal Government to reconsider its decision and reinstate funding for TRCN to ensure that our educators receive the support and regulatory oversight they deserve.”<\/p>\n
The NUT president further pledged to mobilize teachers across Nigeria to advocate for TRCN’s funding restoration, highlighting the union’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and welfare of educators nationwide.<\/p>\n
In response to Amba’s remarks, stakeholders and educators echoed concerns about the potential adverse effects of defunding TRCN on educational standards and teacher professionalism.
