Umeh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate Committee Chairman on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, Victor Umeh, has called out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for exposing corruption cases while allowing offenders to walk free. Senator Umeh made this known on Tuesday at the third National Organizational Development Summit (NODS) in Abuja. He said this problem has continued due to the failure of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to hold the agency and the government accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the sincere conviction that the CSOs have the ability to activate actions that would make the government know that the people are watching,\u201d Umeh said.<\/p>\n<p>However, he added that corrupt practices had been exposed in recent times but things went on like nothing happened. \u201cNobody has told us the fate of those that were exposed to have done wrong things; the CSOs must continue to ask questions about them until they are brought to book,\u201d Umeh urged.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria has had numerous allegations of political corruption and public office mismanagement, especially from the former President, Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s administration, that have been swept under the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>He also cited the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State as a necessary conflict situation where CSOs should have acted. \u201cLook at Rivers State, some people\u2019s tenure expired, and they refused to vacate. Where is it done in the world? Everyone is quiet, and the state is being plunged into unnecessary crisis. The CSOs can come out and speak in a dispassionate and objective manner!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Umeh expressed optimism that the conference could serve as a platform to further build the financial and all-round capacities of participating CSOs so that their impact could be felt in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a panel session at the event, Victor Obuzor, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on CSOs, acknowledged that some laws exist that still restrict the adequate functionality of the CSOs, and called for more cooperation to enhance the civil space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate Committee Chairman on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, Victor Umeh, has called out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for exposing corruption cases while allowing offenders to walk free.
