Taoreed Lagbaja, has revealed that the Nigerian Army has successfully acquired electronic warfare capabilities, marking a significant advancement in the country’s military technology.

Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja made this announcement during the opening of the Maiden Cyber Security Workshop at the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare School in Abuja. The theme of the workshop, “Role of Information Technology in National Security Against Upcoming Threats and Cyber-Attacks,” underscores the importance of cybersecurity in modern defense strategies.

The Chief of Army Staff was represented by Maj.-Gen. Sanusi Dahiru, the Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre. During his address, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja acknowledged that the Nigerian Army had faced challenges in the past when attempting to acquire electronic warfare capabilities. These challenges were attributed to the high cost of devices and a lack of technical expertise within the army. However, he emphasized that these limitations have been overcome.

In his statement, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja highlighted the critical role of electronic warfare and cybersecurity in contemporary military operations. He urged the Cyber Warfare School to expand its collaboration and focus not only on cybersecurity but also on cyber warfare. This approach, he believes, will equip the Nigerian Army with the necessary expertise to integrate cybersecurity into military doctrine and tactics.

Addressing the evolving nature of cyber threats, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja noted that these threats could originate from various sources, including foreign organizations, hacktivists, governments, groups, criminals, and individuals. Cyber-attacks increasingly target critical infrastructure such as power grids, financial systems, healthcare organizations, and government networks.

Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja stressed the importance of preparing the Nigerian Army to defend against these threats, and he credited the establishment of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command (NACWC) and the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare School (NACWS) as significant steps in this direction.

Brig.-Gen. Abdullahi Ahmad, the Commandant of NACWS, explained that the school’s establishment aims to build the capacity of army personnel to counter threats in the cyber domain effectively. The Cyber Security Workshop is designed to provide the school with a comprehensive understanding of modern trends in cybersecurity and cyber warfare. It also serves as a platform for experts, stakeholders, and military professionals to share insights, aligning with the command philosophy to transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.

In closing, Lt.-Gen.
