The workshop was organized by Participation for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) and the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), in collaboration with the Kogi State Office of the Public Defender and Citizens’ Rights Commission (PDCRC).

Rachael Akande, the Executive Director of PIBCID, highlighted that the VAPP law was enacted in response to the rampant gender-based violence (GBV) and human rights abuses in Kogi. “The primary aim of the law is to eliminate violence in both private and public spheres, prohibiting acts such as rape, maiming of spouses, forceful ejection from home, forced isolation, acid attacks, and killings,” Akande explained. The law aims to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims while ensuring severe punishment for offenders.

Despite being domesticated in Kogi in June 2022, Akande lamented the low level of public awareness regarding the VAPP law. “The level of awareness of the provisions of VAPP Law 2022 in Kogi is still shallow compared to what we expect. We want more people to know about the law and take advantage of its provisions,” she stressed. The training aimed to sensitize critical stakeholders to create awareness and ensure the law’s effective implementation to curb GBV in the state.

Barr. Musa Idris, the Director-General of Kogi PDCRC, noted that the commission has successfully handled several cases, including domestic violence and rape, offering their services free of charge. Idris emphasized that the VAPP law now prescribes life imprisonment for rape, a significant increase from the 40-year penalty under the Penal Code.

Resource persons at the workshop delivered presentations on various aspects of the VAPP law, including “Appraisal of the Provisions of Kogi State VAPP Law, 2022,” “Overview of Offences and Punishment,” “The Roles of Protection Officers in Implementing the VAPP Law,” and “Roles of Critical Stakeholders under the Kogi State VAPP Law, 2022.”

Eunice Agbogun, CEO of Challenged Parenthood Network Initiative (CPI), stressed the importance of collaborative efforts for the successful implementation of the VAPP law in Kogi. “The successful implementation of the VAPP Law in Kogi demands a collaborative effort from all stakeholders,” she said.

The workshop served as a critical step towards ensuring that the VAPP law is well-understood and effectively implemented, protecting the rights of individuals and fostering a safer community in Kogi State.

Critical stakeholders in Kogi State have undergone training to enhance awareness and ensure the effective implementation of the Kogi State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law (VAPP) 2022.
