The program&#8217;s goal is to raise public awareness about the need for a fair and equitable transition to a low-carbon economy in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Mbaike, co-founder and Lead of Green Waka, articulated the objectives of the programme, emphasizing the importance of widespread literacy on carbon emissions and climate action. &#8220;Unless we ensure mass literacy targeting the people, especially where they are, just transition is almost impossible,&#8221; Mbaike stated. He highlighted the necessity of a people-centred approach where citizens are fully represented and empowered to take climate action in their respective communities.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Aminu Zakari, Executive Director of the Centre for Climate and Environmental Studies, underscored the significance of individual energy generation. He stressed that empowering individuals to generate their own energy is crucial for achieving a sustainable and resilient energy future.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Korbel, co-founder and Director of The Carbon Literacy Project, in his keynote address, lauded the initiative, stating, &#8220;The renewable power that will drive Nigerians towards a zero-carbon future is that of its people.&#8221; His words resonated with the audience, reinforcing the idea that collective action is essential for addressing climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Comrade Echezona Asuzu, coordinator of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC)&#8217;s Climate Change, Green Jobs &amp; Just Transition Programme, also spoke at the event. He emphasized the need to protect workers&#8217; interests in the face of climate change. &#8220;Trade unions insist on legislative and executive oversight on climate change,&#8221; Asuzu declared, advocating for policies that ensure workers are not left behind in the transition to a green economy.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from various organizations also graced the event.
