This is the latest and most furious moment in the ongoing statewide protests over the contentious Finance Bill.

The chaos did not end there. A fire outbreak was also reported at City Hall, the office of the governor of Nairobi, and at the premises of the Supreme Court. Viral videos posted by Citizens TV Kenya showed City Hall ablaze, vehicles burning at the Supreme Court, and protesters vandalizing properties within the parliament grounds. The images underscore the intensity and widespread nature of the public outcry.

The protests have been fueled by widespread discontent with the Finance Bill, which imposes new taxes on cars, bread, and other essential commodities. This has particularly angered the youth and other segments of the population who see the bill as a direct threat to their already strained economic circumstances.

Earlier on Tuesday, Amnesty International condemned President William Ruto’s government for allegedly abducting citizens amid the protests. The human rights organization reported, “Twelve abductions have taken place over the last five days, with an alarming surge last night.” These accusations have added fuel to the fire, intensifying the public’s anger and distrust of the government.

The protests first erupted last Tuesday as Kenya’s parliament began deliberations on the Finance Bill. The demonstrations have turned violent, with the police using water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Tragically, a 24-year-old protester was killed during one of these clashes, highlighting the severe and sometimes deadly nature of the unrest.

Despite an announcement from parliament about adjustments to the Finance Bill, the protests have continued unabated. The amendments have not satisfied the protesters, who remain adamant in their demand for the complete rejection of the bill.

“We have had a robust public engagement on the proposed Finance Bill,” President Ruto tweeted on Wednesday. “We have adjusted the document accordingly. We are glad we are having conversations about issues, and our institutions are working. This is how democracies function.” However, his assurances have done little to quell the anger on the streets.

Since taking office in 2022, President Ruto has introduced several taxes aimed at addressing Kenya’s national debt, which is estimated to be around $80 billion. These measures are intended to reduce borrowing and boost revenue generation. However, they have also placed additional burdens on the public, leading to widespread discontent.

The current unrest reflects deep-seated frustrations among Kenyans over economic hardships and government policies perceived as out of touch with the realities of everyday life. As the protests continue, the government faces a critical test in balancing fiscal responsibility with social stability and public trust.

A part of Kenya’s parliament was set in flames on Tuesday after hundreds of irate protestors made their way inside, breaking through a robust police presence.
