The absence of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver Andrew Ominnikoron, charged with the rape and murder of passenger Oluwabamise Ayanwole, stalled his trial on Monday. Ominnikoron, 47, faces five counts of rape, conspiracy, sexual assault, and murder.<\/p>\n

The Lagos State Government accused Ominnikoron of raping and murdering 22-year-old fashion designer Ayanwole. At the hearing, the defendant’s counsel, Abayomi Omotubora, informed the court that Ominnikoron was absent due to a leg injury sustained from a fall in the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Justice Sherifat Sonaike, the trial judge, summoned a prison warder to explain the defendant’s absence. The warder confirmed that Ominnikoron was receiving treatment for his injury. The judge then instructed the Director for Public Prosecutions, Dr. Babajide Martins, to ensure the defendant’s presence at the next court session.<\/p>\n

The case has been adjourned until October 17 for the continuation of the trial.<\/p>\n

The prosecution stated that the incident occurred on February 26, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. near the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Centre on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Lagos. They alleged that Ominnikoron forcibly had sexual intercourse with Ayanwole before killing her. The charges are based on Sections 165, 223, 260, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.<\/p>\n
