The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) is entangled in a prolonged crisis with its Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the contentious appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. ASUU has rejected the government’s move to appoint a successor to Professor Abdulrasheed Na\u2019allah, citing procedural irregularities due to the absence of a governing council.<\/p>\n
This dispute has resulted in a strike that has lasted over 42 days. ASUU has further accused the university management of withholding salaries to weaken their resolve. However, the university administration, led by Na\u2019allah, denies these claims, asserting that salaries for all academic staff, including those on strike, have been approved. They attribute any delays to administrative issues with the Remita system.<\/p>\n
The ongoing impasse has significantly disrupted academic activities and heightened tensions within the university community. Dr. Habib Yakubu, Director of Public Relations at UNIABUJA, addressed these concerns earlier today, stating, “Lecturers have received both their May and June 2024 salaries. The salaries were not withheld by the university. The university had completed its part and awaited the processing of salaries for the lecturers long before now.”<\/p>\n
To further clarify the situation, UNIABUJA took to their official Facebook page to announce that salaries have been disbursed. This was confirmed by the university bursar, who expressed disapproval of the alleged false reports regarding the May salaries.<\/p>\n
