Supporters of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have destroyed the statue of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Obi Akpor Local Government Area amid rising political tensions.

The incident occurred on Tuesday as youths protested against attempts by local government chairmen to extend their tenures. The chairmen, who are loyal to Wike, have been at the center of a political conflict with Governor Fubara since 2023.

Tensions escalated when the local government chairmen refused to vacate their offices after their terms expired on Monday, citing a six-month tenure extension granted by a pro-Wike faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In response, Governor Fubara directed all 23 LG chairmen to hand over their duties to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.

Following Fubara’s statewide broadcast, Ijaw youths blocked access to the LG secretariats, preventing the chairmen from entering their offices. The protest reached a climax at the Obi Akpor LG secretariat, where the statue of Nyesom Wike was destroyed, with the protesters chanting “No more Wike.”

This incident highlights the deepening political rift between Fubara and Wike, as well as the growing unrest among the youth in the state.
