President Bola Tinubu emphasised the importance of strengthening cross-sectoral partnerships between Nigeria and the EU during a meeting with a delegation from the European Union (EU) led by Ms. Jutta Urpilainen, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships.<\/p>\n

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Advisor to the President on Media and Publicity, issued a statement in Abuja today that said as much.<\/p>\n

Ajuri said during the meeting, President Tinubu commended the signing of eight financing agreements between Nigeria and the EU under the “EU Global Gateway in Nigeria” initiative. The President underlined the significance of economic cooperation in digital education, traditional and renewable energy, and broadband access between Nigeria and the EU.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the importance of democracy and emphasized the ongoing reforms to enhance Nigeria’s economy, making it capable of lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty. President Tinubu stated, “If we succeed, democracy succeeds. If we succeed, freedom succeeds.”<\/p>\n

Ms. Jutta Urpilainen, the EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, lauded Nigeria’s role as a key partner of the EU, both in politics and economics, and in shaping the social landscape across Africa. She mentioned the EU’s shift towards establishing an equal and mutually beneficial partnership with Africa, focusing on the “Global Gateway” investment program.<\/p>\n

This strategy, agreed upon at the AU-EU Summit in Brussels, aims to attract \u20ac300 billion in investments, with \u20ac150 billion allocated to Africa. The EU Commissioner highlighted the potential for expanding the oil and gas partnership, acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic importance in the “Global Gateway” strategy, which seeks to expedite green and digital transformations.<\/p>\n

The EU delegation also includes Ms. Samuela Isopi, Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS; Ms. Rita Laranjinha, Managing Director of Africa and European External Action Service (EEAS); Ms. Lora Borissova, Africa Advisor, Cabinet of EU; and Ms. Maria Pilar Palmero Vaquero, Head of Unit for Western Africa, Directorate-General International Partnerships (DG INTPA).<\/p>\n
