A combined team of police personnel from the FCT Command and other security agencies successfully thwarted a bank robbery in Abaji on Thursday, neutralizing two armed robbers in the process. The dramatic incident unfolded when a gang of robbers invaded a bank located in the community, leading to a fierce shootout.<\/p>\n
Eyewitnesses reported that during the confrontation, one police officer was injured, and a security guard working at the bank also sustained a gunshot wound. In a shocking turn of events, angry residents of the Abaji area council apprehended one of the wounded robbers who failed to escape and set him ablaze.<\/p>\n
The ordeal began around 5 p.m. as the bank was winding down its operations for the day. The robbers, arriving in two unmarked vehicles, first attacked the police station on Toto Road. The surprise assault resulted in the death of Inspector Habila, who was shot in the chest during the initial gunfire.<\/p>\n
Following the attack on the police station, the gang proceeded to the bank, firing shots indiscriminately. Despite their aggressive efforts, the robbers were unable to access the strong room where the majority of the bank’s money was stored. They only managed to steal some cash from the counter. During the chaos, a bank security guard attempting to hide was shot.<\/p>\n
A prompt response from a combined team of police, soldiers, vigilantes, and local hunters led to a fierce gun battle with the robbers. Two of the robbers were killed in the exchange, while a third, who was wounded and unable to escape, was captured and set on fire by irate residents.<\/p>\n
FCT Police Commissioner CP Benneth Igweh arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and confirmed that two robbers were killed in the gunfight with security operatives. He also revealed that police anti-robbery squads and hunters had been deployed to the bush areas around Abaji to track down the remaining fleeing robbers.<\/p>\n
CP Igweh praised the coordinated efforts of the security forces in preventing the robbery and foiling the attack. He also expressed his condolences to the family of the fallen Inspector Habila, acknowledging the sacrifice made in the line of duty.<\/p>\n
