ACReSAL’s commitment aligns with the state government’s proposal to invest in the dam to ensure the provision of potable drinking water for the public.

During an assessment visit to Asa and Agba Dams, Eruda Bridge, and other environmentally challenging spots in the state, Umar expressed concerns about the current state of Asa Dam. He noted that water hyacinth had overrun the dam, hampering its function as a source of potable water. He also condemned the pollution caused by local fishermen and emphasized the need for urgent government intervention.

“I am personally disappointed with what I saw here in Asa Dam. The dilapidated, worn out, and outdated facilities at the dam are worrisome. We are ready to revitalize the dam by investing in it for accumulative and other activities. This dam requires urgent rehabilitation and intervention,” Umar stated.

Funded and supported by the World Bank through the Federal Government, ACReSAL has secured a $700 million loan to support the 19 northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in addressing environmental and ecological challenges. The project focuses on three main pillars: dry land management, climate-smart agricultural activities resilience, and strengthening policies and institutions.

Dr. Joy Agene, ACReSAL Task Team Leader, highlighted the project’s aim to support vulnerable communities and improve their livelihoods. She emphasized the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as women, youths, and the elderly, urging public cooperation to ensure the project’s success.

Kwara State Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Shehu Usman, commended the ACReSAL team for their on-ground assessment of the state’s environmental issues. He described the project as a comprehensive approach that integrates agriculture, environment, and water management.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Usman Lade, mentioned that the state’s collaboration with ACReSAL was necessary due to limited funds. He highlighted the impact of aquaculture practices on Asa Dam and the plans to incorporate irrigation farming through the project. Lade also revealed efforts to extend the intervention to all three senatorial districts in the state.

The ACReSAL team, along with World Bank representatives and state officials, conducted a detailed facilities assessment tour of Asa and Agba Dams and Eruda Bridge. They also visited the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, seeking his blessings for the successful implementation of the project.

Umar assured the Emir that the revitalization efforts would provide Kwara residents with clean drinking water and support agricultural practices. In response, the Emir promised a cooperative working environment and expressed his full support for the project.

The National Project Coordinator for Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Abdulhamid Umar, has pledged support for the planned revitalization of Asa Dam water works in Ilorin, Kwara State.
