{"id":34698,"date":"2024-06-13T10:09:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-13T10:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=34698"},"modified":"2024-06-13T10:09:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-13T10:09:26","slug":"north-central-group-faults-attack-on-akume-over-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/06\/13\/north-central-group-faults-attack-on-akume-over-minimum-wage\/","title":{"rendered":"North Central Group Faults Attack On Akume Over Minimum Wage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group known as North Central Media Forum (NCMF) has called for support for the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, to enable him to discharge his duties without distraction from any angle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">Akume had declared his inability to pay his four drivers a monthly salary of N100,000 each at a recent meeting with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja, citing his financial constraints, \u00a0coinciding with the agitation of Nigerian workers for a new minimum wage of N250,000.<\/p>\n<p>The statement met hardnosed criticisms, particularly from those who oppose him politically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">However, in a statement in Abuja, the forum said the criticism is unfair and a \u201cgross exaggeration of an honest man\u2019s words\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Akume has always been forthright and transparent about his financial situation. He lives on his pension as a former governor of Benue State and his salary as the secretary to the government of the federation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">\u201cUnlike many others in positions of power, Akume is not involved in any business ventures, and he has never engaged in corrupt practices to amass personal wealth. During his tenure as governor, senator, minister and now the SGF, he has always dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving his people, using his wisdom and resources. He might represent them selflessly and generously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s president, Abubakar Yakubu, added that \u201cit is essential to highlight that Senator Akume\u2019s modest lifestyle is a testament to his integrity and honesty as he has consistently chosen to prioritise the needs of the people over personal gain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">He recalled how Akume\u2019s tenure as governor, senator, and minister was marked by numerous instances of personal sacrifice, during which he extended his resources to solve the problems of his constituents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">The group maintained that many of those who criticise the SGF today for his financial limitations have benefited from his generosity and dedication to public service at one time or another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">\u201cWe are shocked and dismayed by the hypocrisy of those who now question his financial transparency.
