This announcement was made by Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the refinery, at the $20 billion facility in Lagos on Monday.

Dangote confirmed that the slight delay in production prompted the shift from the originally proposed June date to the middle of July. He stated that the refinery is scheduled to begin producing petrol between July 10 and 15, with supply to local marketers starting from the third week of July.

“We had a bit of a delay, but PMS will start coming out by July 10 to 15. However, we want to keep it in the tank to make sure that it settles. So, by the third week of July, we’ll be able to take it into the market,” Dangote explained.

Earlier reports indicated that the Dangote Refinery was expected to start production and supply of petrol this month. Analysts at Standard & Poor’s Global (S&P Global) Commodities Insights had predicted the refinery would begin supplying petrol in the second quarter of the year, specifically in June.

“We are starting to see signs of activities, but all eyes are on when we’ll start to see gasoline production from that project. There is significant pressure from the Nigerian government for a substantial volume of that supply to be directed to the domestic market.

“In reality, when we see that scale-up is still subject to debate. Dangote has recently been suggesting some optimistic timelines. They most recently said they were looking to produce gasoline by May. But realistically, our analysts expect that might be closer to the fourth quarter of this year,” the analysts noted.

Despite the delay in petrol production, the refinery has already begun supplying jet fuel and diesel to domestic marketers in Nigeria. Additionally, the $20 billion facility has started exporting its first jet fuel cargo to Europe.

The Dangote Refinery has postponed the commencement of premium motor spirit (PMS) production, commonly known as petrol, from June to mid-July.
