Mr. Chukwu explained that despite efforts and stakeholder engagements, the rerun election, which had been planned for June 8, will now take place on a date yet to be communicated by the commission.

“Last week, the scheduled rerun election was postponed and duly communicated to all stakeholders with a clear reason for the postponement,” Mr. Chukwu stated. He expressed concern over misinformation circulating about the election, emphasizing, “But I am surprised some misguided people are taking up all sorts of unfounded falsehood and rumors against the commission that it seems the election had been held in secret even as I am speaking to you.”

The rerun election was necessitated following the nullification of the March 18, 2023 election by the tribunal, which declared the initial results inconclusive. In that election, Bright Ngene of the Labour Party had been declared the winner and subsequently sworn in. This postponement marks the third attempt by INEC to conduct the rerun election.

On the scheduled day, voters arrived at the affected polling units as early as 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, only to find no INEC officials present. This absence led to confusion and disappointment among the electorate.

Mr. Bright Ngene, who was present at the polling centre, expressed his dismay over the situation, stating that neither he nor his party had been informed of the election’s postponement. “We were ready to participate and ensure our supporters could cast their votes, but it is disappointing to find out that the election will not be held today,” Mr. Ngene told journalists.

Conversely, Sam Ngene, the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, indicated that his party had been duly informed about the postponement. “We received communication from INEC regarding the security concerns and the need to delay the election. It’s crucial that we prioritize the safety of voters and election officials,” he remarked.

The repeated postponements have raised concerns among voters and political stakeholders regarding the effectiveness and reliability of the electoral process in Enugu South I. As the commission works to address the security issues and reschedule the election, the community remains anxious for a resolution that will allow them to exercise their democratic rights safely and fairly.

Further updates from INEC are awaited to determine the new date for the rerun election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the rescheduled rerun election for the Enugu South I state constituency, citing security reasons for the delay.
