This landmark agreement was announced in Abuja by Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu, representing Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The collaboration aims to advance the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill and the Bill on Women’s Parliamentary Seats. Kalu emphasized the importance of extending advocacy efforts beyond the parliamentary chambers to rural areas, ensuring that constituents understand the benefits of increased women’s inclusion in governance.

“The advocacy should not only be within the people’s parliament alone, it should go beyond here to the rural areas for the constituents to know why we want to go this way,” Kalu stated. He highlighted the necessity of showcasing comparative analyses with other countries to demonstrate the potential benefits for Nigeria.

Kalu also stressed the importance of building the capacity of women and sensitizing them to support female aspirants. He noted that women should be encouraged to contribute their best to national development, not as competitors with men, but as partners.

Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women’s Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, addressed the pressing issue of low female representation in Nigeria’s governance. She highlighted that only about 4 percent of women are elected to the National Assembly, and merely seven women serve in the 45-member federal cabinet. “This is the challenge we must all work together to surmount. You have demonstrated leadership, dedication, and passion on this journey. UN Women is committed to walking this journey and building a strong and sustainable partnership with your office and with the membership of the National Assembly,” Eyong said.

This MoU signifies a significant step toward addressing the underrepresentation of women in governance and aims to foster a more inclusive political environment in Nigeria.

The partnership between the House of Representatives and UN Women will include a range of initiatives to support this goal. These initiatives will involve educational campaigns, workshops, and mentorship programs designed to empower women and equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in political roles.

Additionally, the collaboration will focus on creating platforms for women to voice their concerns and advocate for policies that support gender equality. This will involve working closely with civil society organizations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that the message of inclusion reaches every corner of the country.

The agreement also aims to establish a monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress and identify areas for improvement. This framework will help ensure that the objectives of the MoU are met and that tangible changes are seen in the representation and participation of women in Nigerian governance.

The House of Representatives has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN Women to enhance women’s participation in governance.
