The letter reveals concerns that AI companies possess extensive, undisclosed information regarding both the effectiveness and drawbacks of their technologies, which could have severe societal implications.

The risks outlined in the letter include exacerbation of societal inequities, the spread of disinformation and fake news, and the potential for AI to become uncontrollable, possibly leading to human extinction. The employees argue that current supervisory measures are inadequate and emphasize the need for robust whistleblower protections.

While acknowledging the potential for AI to drive unprecedented positive change, the authors of the letter stress that these risks can be mitigated through the involvement of scientists, politicians, and society at large. However, they caution that the economic motivations of AI companies often hinder effective regulation.

The group highlights that AI companies are aware of the various risks and the adequacy of their protective measures but have weak obligations to report such information to governments or the public. They criticize the use of broad non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that prevent employees from speaking out about their concerns, noting that ordinary whistleblower protections are insufficient as they typically focus on illegal activities, whereas many AI risks are not yet regulated.

The letter urges AI companies to develop secure mechanisms for employee whistleblowing and to refrain from retaliating against employees who raise concerns about risks.

In response to the letter, a representative from OpenAI told The New York Times that the company is committed to developing the most capable and safest AI systems, supporting rigorous debate, and engaging with governments, civil society, and other communities globally. “We agree that rigorous debate is crucial given the significance of this technology, and we’ll continue to engage with governments, civil society and other communities around the world,” the spokesperson said.

Google declined to comment on the matter.

The letter was signed by ten current and three former employees, all of whom chose to remain anonymous. This call for greater transparency and whistleblower protection echoes previous efforts to address AI-related risks, such as the open letter from the Future of Life Institute, which included signatories like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak and called for a six-month moratorium on AI development—an appeal that went unheeded.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Some current and former employees of OpenAI and Google DeepMind have raised alarms about the potential dangers posed by artificial intelligence, calling for stronger protections for whistleblowers in an open letter.
