This effort is being spearheaded by the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) with the aim of addressing the city’s mental health challenges proactively.

Effiong Ayi, Executive Director of CUDA, announced on Wednesday that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance mental health care in the metropolis. The program follows the recent inauguration of a mental holding center by Governor Bassey Otu, marking his administration’s first year in office.

The evacuation began on Monday, and the holding center has already registered over 30 individuals. Ayi stated, “The primary goal of this exercise is to eliminate the large presence of mentally challenged individuals in our metropolis and facilitate their rehabilitation, enabling them to lead productive lives in our society.”

The operation was deemed urgent due to the increasing number of mentally challenged persons causing disturbances within the city. Ayi highlighted that the completion and reopening of the remand center by the governor prompted this action, addressing the challenges these individuals pose in the urban environment.

The initiative aims not only to provide immediate relief but also to ensure long-term rehabilitation. “They will be provided with the care and treatment they require, and once they regain sanity, they will be reintegrated into society,” Ayi explained. This approach aligns with best practices in maintaining public health and safety, ensuring that affected individuals receive the necessary support for successful reintegration.

The holding center is equipped with essential amenities, including a standby generator, water supply, and cooking facilities, to ensure the well-being of the inmates. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving public health and safety in Cross River State, highlighting a compassionate and structured approach to mental health challenges.

The Cross River State Government has initiated an exercise to evacuate and support individuals with mental health conditions from Calabar, the state capital.
