The Chinese foreign ministry has firmly denied allegations that China is using electric vehicle (EV) subsidies in violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.<\/p>\n
“China never makes use of subsidies for electric vehicles that have been prohibited by the World Trade Organization,” a foreign ministry spokesperson stated on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The denial follows concerns raised by U.S. President Joe Biden and other officials about the influx of low-priced Chinese EVs into the U.S. market, which some fear could undermine American automakers who are still heavily invested in gasoline-powered vehicles.<\/p>\n
“China’s new energy products, including electric vehicles, are widely popular in the international market,” said Mao Ning, the ministry’s spokesperson, during a regular press briefing. “They are the result of the combined effects of comparative advantages and market laws.”<\/p>\n
Mao’s comments were in direct response to President Biden’s remarks suggesting that China leverages subsidies to flood the U.S. market with affordable EVs. However, Mao emphasized that the success of China\u2019s new energy products is due to the efforts of enterprises rather than government subsidies.<\/p>\n
“Last year, China exported only 13,000 electric vehicles to the United States. How can they flood the U.S. market?” Mao questioned, highlighting the relatively small volume of exports compared to the concerns being raised.<\/p>\n
President Biden has pledged to increase tariffs on several Chinese sectors in response to these concerns. Proposed measures include raising import duties on Chinese EVs to over 100% and doubling semiconductor duties to 50%.<\/p>\n
The Chinese government\u2019s denial underscores the ongoing trade tensions between the two economic giants, particularly in the burgeoning EV market. As the global demand for electric vehicles grows, competition between Chinese and American manufacturers is intensifying, with both sides accusing the other of unfair trade practices.<\/p>\n
