His remarks were made on the occasion of World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>President Tinubu emphasized the need for proactive measures to protect the land and ecosystem, including afforestation, water conservation, and stopping the indiscriminate felling of trees. He noted, \u201cTo heal our world, we must begin by healing the land and its people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>World Environment Day, established by the United Nations during the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, serves to raise awareness on environmental issues. This year&#8217;s theme, &#8220;Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,&#8221; holds particular significance for Nigeria, where drought poses a significant threat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, 40 percent of the world&#8217;s land is degraded, affecting half of the global population. The organization also reports that the number and duration of droughts have increased by 29 percent since 2000, and without urgent action, over three-quarters of the world&#8217;s population may be affected by droughts by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In pursuit of Nigeria&#8217;s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, President Tinubu has established the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, which he chairs, to oversee climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
