Governor Umo Eno announced this at a stakeholders meeting organized by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) in Uyo.

Represented by Frank Archibong, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Governor Eno stated that the meeting was a preparatory step for the upcoming council polls. He also revealed that newly elected council chairmen would be sworn in on December 7, in accordance with the state’s electoral timeline.

Governor Eno, addressing political party representatives at the meeting, emphasized the importance of preparation for the elections. “This engagement is a precursor to all electoral activities that will ultimately lead to the 2024 local government elections. The council poll could not be held in 2023 due to the short timeframe, as we assumed office on May 29. That is why we currently have caretaker committees in place. I see nothing stopping us from holding the elections this year,” he stated.

Aniedi Ikoiwak, the Chairman of AKISIEC, highlighted that the meeting aimed to inform stakeholders about the preparations for the council polls. “This meeting gives stakeholders the opportunity to interrogate the electoral process as planned,” Ikoiwak said.

He assured that the commission would ensure the adequate deployment of both electoral and security personnel during the exercise. Ikoiwak also advised political parties to conduct their primaries between July 22 and August 26, with campaign activities officially starting on August 26.

The announcement of the election date marks a significant step towards ensuring democratic governance at the local level in Akwa Ibom. Stakeholders and political parties are encouraged to engage actively in the process to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

In addition to outlining the election timetable, the stakeholders’ meeting addressed the roles and responsibilities of various electoral actors, emphasizing transparency and adherence to the electoral guidelines. Governor Eno’s administration is committed to strengthening local governance through a robust electoral process that reflects the will of the people.

As preparations continue, the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission is expected to roll out further details on the logistics and security measures to ensure a smooth electoral process. This initiative underscores the state government’s dedication to fostering democratic principles and promoting active civic participation in local governance.

The Akwa Ibom Government has scheduled October 26 for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
