Labour leaders have arrived at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for a closed-door meeting with government representatives. A highly placed source informed our correspondent on Monday that the leaders are already seated and awaiting the arrival of the government representatives.<\/p>\n

This meeting comes amid ongoing tensions, as some unions have shut their workplaces in compliance with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike. The strike, announced on Friday, is set to commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.<\/p>\n

NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC counterpart Festus Osifo expressed serious concerns and disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to finalize and pass a new National Minimum Wage Act into law. Both unions had given an ultimatum of May 31, 2024, for the negotiations on the new minimum wage.<\/p>\n

Negotiations broke down on Tuesday after the government increased its initial offer of N57,000 by adding N3,000 to make it N60,000, a proposal rejected by labour. In response, labour reduced their demand from N497,000 to N494,000.<\/p>\n
