StarTimes Nigeria, in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, has successfully launched the 2024 Chinese Film Festival in Abuja, held from May 25 to 31. The festival aimed to promote diversity, harmony, and provide an opportunity for Nigerians to learn more about China and its people. The event featured a selection of the highest-grossing Chinese films of 2024, including “YOLO (You Only Live Once),” “Speedy Life 2,” and “Jue Ji.”<\/p>\n
StarTimes CEO Joshua Wang expressed his enthusiasm for the festival, emphasizing its role in fostering cultural exchange between China and Nigeria. “The festival is a celebration of the deep-rooted friendship between China and Nigeria. It\u2019s a testament to our shared love for storytelling and our appreciation for diverse cultures,” Wang said. He also highlighted StarTimes’ efforts in introducing numerous Chinese movies, dramas, and series to the Nigerian audience, including dubbing content into Hausa and Yoruba for better understanding. “Remember, you can watch festival films on your StarTimes mobile app on-the-go,” he added.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the event, Mr. Li Xuda, Director of the Chinese Cultural Center Nigeria (CCCN) and Chinese Cultural Counsellor, underscored the significance of Nollywood to China. He noted that while Nollywood is the second largest film industry in the world by the number of films produced annually, it has yet to penetrate the Chinese film market, which is the second largest global film market.<\/p>\n
The festival not only showcased top Chinese films but also included discussions and panels aimed at enhancing cultural understanding and cooperation between the two nations. Participants had the chance to engage with filmmakers and industry experts, gaining insights into the Chinese film industry and exploring opportunities for collaboration.<\/p>\n
In addition to film screenings, the festival featured cultural exhibitions and interactive sessions designed to deepen the audience’s appreciation of Chinese traditions and modern cultural expressions. These activities highlighted the rich tapestry of Chinese heritage and its influence on contemporary cinema.<\/p>\n
