As President Bola Tinubu began the commissioning of projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark his one year in office, he pledged unwavering support for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Tinubu made this vow during the commissioning of the Southern Parkway (S8\/S9) from Christian Centre to Ring Road 1, Nnamdi Azikiwe Way, which has been renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way. The President praised Wike, describing him as a dedicated team leader and \u201cMr. Project.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, Tinubu commended Wike for instilling hope in Abuja residents through significant infrastructure projects. He emphasized the critical role of infrastructure in creating jobs and fostering economic prosperity. Tinubu noted that without Wike’s commitment, the Southern Parkway project might have been abandoned, highlighting the road as a symbol of the team’s collective effort.<\/p>\n
“The completion of the Southern Parkway underscores our commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, as we strive to build a world-class capital city,” Tinubu stated. “We recognize the fact that infrastructure is an enabler of jobs, economic development, and prosperity. We believe we are going to achieve all of that.<\/p>\n
“The needs of our citizens are paramount in our minds, so by making our citizens the central focus of our development, we believe Nigeria will succeed.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we formally inaugurate this road, I am greatly honored to have it named after me. Thank you very much; thank you for being a very good team leader. We all collectively will not let you down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier, Wike provided details about the Southern Parkway, describing it as a principal artery conceived and planned to provide access and connectivity to the southern development flank of the city, as outlined in the Abuja Master Plan. He mentioned that the Northern Parkway, another principal artery, has been substantially developed over the years to service the northern districts.<\/p>\n
Wike elaborated on the project\u2019s history and scope, noting that it was awarded in December 2010 to Messrs Setraco Nig. Ltd. at a contract sum of N16,234,553,335.64. The contract was later revised to N35,757,763,310.18 in March 2021 due to changes in scope and other economic factors.<\/p>\n
“The scope of work comprised the construction of 5.4km length of the road, made up of two main carriageways of four lanes each and two service carriageways of two lanes each, making a total of 12 lanes,” Wike explained. “It also includes the construction of four interchanges, a total of eight bridges, in addition to the provision of associated underground engineering infrastructure facilities.”<\/p>\n
Wike emphasized the significance of the Southern Parkway, comparing it to the Northern Parkway and stressing its importance in the city’s development. The project, now completed, promises to enhance connectivity and support the economic growth of Abuja.<\/p>\n
