Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, made this announcement on Monday during the ministerial briefing to mark the first year of the Bola Tinubu administration.

Keyamo clarified the decision, stating, “It remains suspended and it was never truly Air Nigeria. It was only branded as Air Nigeria. It was Ethiopian Airlines trying to fly our flag.”

He questioned the rationale behind involving foreign airlines in a national project, asking, “If it is so, why not allow our local people to fly our flag? Why bring foreign airlines to fly our flag? So nobody should deceive you that it was Air Nigeria.”

The Minister emphasized the importance of promoting local content and capacity within Nigeria’s aviation sector. He pointed out that the initial plan involving Ethiopian Airlines did not align with the vision of a truly national carrier operated by Nigerians for Nigerians.

This suspension marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to developing a national airline, highlighting a focus on self-reliance and empowerment of local aviation stakeholders. The decision aims to foster the growth of indigenous airlines and ensure that any future national carrier truly represents and serves the interests of the Nigerian people.

Keyamo further elaborated on the government’s commitment to revitalizing the aviation industry, stressing the need for robust policies that encourage local investment and participation. He assured that the administration is working on new strategies to achieve a sustainable and genuinely national airline project.

In the meantime, the suspension has sparked discussions within the aviation sector, with stakeholders expressing mixed reactions. Some industry experts support the move, seeing it as a necessary step to ensure national interests are prioritized. Others, however, have raised concerns about the potential impact on international partnerships and the timeline for establishing a national carrier.

As the government reviews its strategy, Keyamo called on local airlines and aviation professionals to prepare for more significant roles in the nation’s aviation landscape. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve aviation infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, aiming to create a conducive environment for the growth of domestic airlines.

The Federal Government has indefinitely suspended the Air Nigeria Airline project.
