This landmark event, held on Thursday, marks a significant step towards the country’s goal of reducing dependence on expensive energy sources and promoting cleaner, renewable alternatives.

The launch, which took place in Mabushi, Abuja, was accompanied by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among the parties to develop a network of charging stations across Nigeria. This initiative is poised to foster the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and sustainable energy practices nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Kanayo Odoe, Managing Director of NNEL, emphasized the importance of renewable energy. “Renewables are the future. They are cheaper, cleaner, and less harmful to the environment and human health,” Odoe stated. He highlighted NNPC’s commitment to cleaner energy sources, noting that the establishment of NNEL is a testament to this dedication. The new charging stations will not only serve electric vehicles but also have the capacity to power homes.

“This is the way of the future. This is the way of the world. Aside from maybe climate change, we are particular too about the health impacts of fossil fuels on the environment,” Odoe explained. He underscored the economic benefits, stating that renewable energy is more cost-effective for Nigerians. “Our GCEO of NNPC is very particular about renewable energies. That has led to the birth of NNPC New Energies Limited. Moving forward, there’s going to be a lot of action in this space, not only for EV recharging stations but also for lighting up Nigeria through solar.”

The initiative will extend beyond the northern regions, with plans to expand the charging infrastructure across the southern parts of Nigeria as well. “There’s sunlight in all parts of Nigeria, and we are committed to working with our partners to spread cheaper sources of energy to consumers,” Odoe added.

He further explained the collaborative effort involved in this project. “We have the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), Nigus, and NNPC as non-operators in this case. NNEL is working with Nigus to supply the equipment and charging stations. AYM Ashafa’s petrol stations will host the charging equipment, making them the base for these new facilities. The source of energy is limitless as long as we have sunlight. This direct source from God can be used not only to charge vehicles but also to power homes.”

Abdulmuminu Maishanu, Chairman and Chief Executive of Shafa Energies, expressed his enthusiasm for participating in the pilot phase of the program. “We are excited to be part of this initiative. Our objective is to ensure that electric vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) become viable alternatives to the very expensive fuels currently in use,” Maishanu said.

This launch signifies a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The collaboration between NNEL, Shafa Energies, and Nigus International represents a forward-thinking approach to energy solutions, aiming to provide affordable, clean energy to the Nigerian populace.

As the country moves towards a greener future, the establishment of EV charging stations is expected to play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a healthier environment. The ongoing expansion of these facilities will not only support the adoption of electric vehicles but also contribute to the broader goal of achieving energy sustainability in Nigeria.

NNPC New Energies Limited (NNEL), a subsidiary of the national oil company, alongside Shafa Energies and Nigus International, has launched Nigeria’s first Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station.
