A resident of the Kubwa area in Bwari Local Council, Abuja, identified as Onyebuchi Anele, was reportedly shot in the face with a tear gas canister by a police officer on Wednesday, May 22.<\/p>\n
An eyewitness recounted that the incident occurred while Anele was on his way home from work. After a minor collision with an okada (motorcycle) rider and passenger, Anele ensured they were unharmed and continued towards his home in Haj Estate. Policemen arrived at the scene and insisted Anele accompany them to their station, despite the okada rider and passenger having left.<\/p>\n
A disagreement ensued, escalating into a quarrel. During the confrontation, a policeman fired a tear gas canister at close range, hitting Anele directly in the face. Widely circulated pictures and videos showed Anele bleeding with a metallic object embedded in his face.<\/p>\n
Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that the incident was a result of “accidental discharge.” She confirmed that it occurred in the Byazhin community in Kubwa, Abuja, at around 9:45 pm on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Benneth Igweh, has ordered an investigation into the incident. Anele was taken to the Kubwa General Hospital and later referred to the National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 8 am on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
